Whatana works in partnership with international institutions seeking strategic investments or entry into high-growth sectors in Mozambique. The company identifies opportunities, arranges and executes investments, and participates in the management of its portfolio companies after the investment stage, primarily through board memberships.

The company’s portfolio includes equity participations in Vodacom Moçambique, a provider of mobile voice, data and converged services, M-Pesa, an international mobile payments and money transfer service with 51 million customers across seven countries in Africa, and Bayport, a Mozambican provider of personal and business credit, savings, transaction and insurance services.

In the oil and gas space, Whatana invests in 3PL and 4PL logistics infrastructure and services for the handling of extraction and development equipment, as well as in concessions holding and terminal management in partnership with South Africa’s LBH Group, which focuses on ship agency and port and cargo services. Other investments pertain to the provision of general staffing services for contractors, specifically within the LNG segment.

Whatana also participates as developer and investor in conventional and renewable energy projects. Past energy investments include the 175-MW Mugeba Hydropower Project in Zambezia province and the 2.4-GW Moatize Power Plant in Tete province, together with Acwa Power, Vale and Mistui.
