Envision to build green hydrogen park in Spain

MADRID, September 11, 2024 – China’s Envision Energy has partnered with the government of Spain to develop an integrated green hydrogen industrial park, the company announced on Tuesday.

The facility will serve as a research, design, manufacture and services centre for green hydrogen applications including electrolysis, air separation, ammonia synthesis and scalable green ammonia production.

The initial investment will be USD 1 billion and construction is scheduled to begin in H1 2026. Envision said it was working with the government to identify a suitable site for the development.

 

Ratified as part of an MoU signed during a recent visit to China by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the venture is a means to advance Spain’s green hydrogen adoption plans and accelerate its progress towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 23% by 2030.

In August 2024, Chinese electrolyser manufacturer Hygreen Energy announced it would invest USD 2.2 billion towards another green hydrogen plant in Spain as part of a set of agreements, including one with Spanish water and electricity utility Coxabengoa for the development of green hydrogen technology in the southern region of Andalusia.

Envision’s facility will also deliver 5 GW of electrolysis capacity, a significant contribution to Spain’s hydrogen development roadmap, which targets the production of 11 GW by 2030. Upon completion, the facility will be vetted by French certification body Bureau Veritas.
