Faruque Assubuje, project manager at Manica Freight Services, and Andreas Kusza, senior management advisor, talk to The Energy Year about the importance of diversification to secure steady business in Mozambique. Manica Freight Services is a Mozambican ship agency and freight forwarding company.

What sets Manica Freight Services apart from other logistics companies?
Faruque ASSUBUJE: An element that gives us an edge is our diversification. We are not only active in logistics but also in ship agency services. The company started as a shipping agent and later started operating on the cargo side. We handle many commodities and have large warehouses in Beira, which is an important corridor for landlocked countries such as Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Have you carried out any work in the energy sector in recent years?
FA: In 2021, we bid on the Afungi LNG project with international partners and managed to win contracts for project-related equipment. Unfortunately, we had to put them on hold, but we managed to keep our staff on board and a few months later we won a contract and were able to mobilise them to work in Pemba.

What sectors generate most of your business?
Andreas KUSZA: Energy represents around 30% of our business, but we expect the figure to grow because activities are starting to resume in Afungi. That project will generate substantial associated business. It will require the construction of buildings and campsites, for example. We are also involved in heavy sand and graphite projects, and we were the logistics provider chosen for Mozambique’s very first solar park in Mocuba.
