Minerals Development Oman

Minerals Development Oman (MDO) is an Omani mining company engaged in resource exploration, developing upstream and downstream extraction projects and commercialising metals and minerals. MDO is owned by the Oman Investment Authority (76.8%) and the Oman National Investment Company (23.2%).

MDO is the largest owner of mining concessions in Oman, counting lots for approximately 22,000 square kilometres across the country in locations with access to power, logistics infrastructure and outlets for ground and maritime transportation.

MDO’s portfolio consists of wholly owned subsidiaries and participations in ventures which operate across 13 mining concessions in Oman.

Metals:

  • Mazoon Mining (100%), copper
  • Oman Mining (100%), copper and ferrosilicon
  • Oman Chromite (25.4%), metallic and refractory chromite

Industrial minerals:

  • Wafra Mining (100%), limestone
  • Naqa Salt (100%), industrial salt from seawater
  • Wusta Mining (75%), silica
  • Duqm Quarries (70%), construction aggregates
  • Ahjaar Mining (40%), gabbro
  • Kunooz Oman (20%), gypsum, gabbro, limestone, marble and concrete

Downstream, OMD has 35% ownership of Sohar Titanium, a titanium dioxide manufacturing facility, and 14.8% of Synergies Casting Oman, which manufactures aluminium alloy wheels for the automotive industry.

MDO aims to be a champion in the responsible development of Oman’s mining sector by offering financial, know-how and best practices support to maximize the value of the country’s mineral resources. The company is committed to providing young Omani talents with skills  to lead the mining sector in the future and has an Omanisation rate of more than 85%.

Towards attracting investments in Oman’s extractive industry from national and international players, the company maintains an active portfolio of greenfield and brownfield exploration projects concerning base metals and industrial minerals.
