Nigeria signs 2.6-GW solar modular supply agreement

COPENHAGEN, March 27, 2025 – Nigeria has signed a solar modular supply agreement for 2.6 GW with LONGi Solar France and Alternative Petroleum & Power, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) revealed in a statement on Wednesday.

The solar modules will be used to power Nigeria’s Green Hydrogen Hub project, located in the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone in Akwa Ibom State. The deal is one of the largest solar procurement deals ever in sub-Saharan Africa, and the solar park will be one of the largest in the world. Overall, the Green Hydrogen Hub project is expected to create more than 20,000 direct jobs.

Idare Ekpo, chief visionary officer of Alternative Petroleum & Power, said, “This project is the dawn of a new industrial revolution in Nigeria — one powered not by oil, but by innovation, sunlight and green molecules. It is the clearest signal yet that Nigeria is not just catching up but stepping forward as a global clean energy leader.”

The new solar deal extends upon the partnership recently established between LONGi and Nigerian local Alternative Petroleum & Power. The two companies announced the signing of a strategic partnership for the Green Hydrogen Hub project on February 22, 2025. The green hydrogen hub is a EUR 7.6-billion project that aims to produce 1.2 million tonnes of green methanol per year.
