Centrica and Equinor sign $27-billion UK gas supply deal

STAVANGER, June 6, 2025 – Centrica and Equinor have signed a 10-year agreement under which Equinor will deliver 5 bcm (176.6 bcf) of natural gas per year to the UK starting in October 2025, the companies announced on Thursday.

The deal is worth around USD 27 billion at current gas prices.

In 2024, the UK’s total gas demand was 55.8 bcm (19.7 tcf). Almost two-thirds of that volume was imported, with around half of the imports coming from Norway. The volume under this new agreement represents nearly 10% of the UK’s annual gas demand, making it one of the largest bilateral deals in Equinor’s portfolio.

Under the terms of the contract, natural gas could be replaced with hydrogen in the future to support the development of the UK’s hydrogen economy.

“This landmark agreement underscores the vital role that natural gas plays as a transition fuel. Today’s deal not only ensures the UK’s energy security has improved but also paves the way for a burgeoning hydrogen market,” said Centrica group CEO Chris O’Shea.

Equinor’s UK country manager, Alex Grant, added, “The UK and the North Sea are a core area in our long-term ambitions to remain a supplier of reliable energy and to help decarbonise societies and industries. The new gas sales agreement with Centrica will be a key element in this.”

Centrica is a UK-based energy services company that serves more than 10 million customers through its brands British Gas, Bord Gáis Energy and Centrica Business Solutions. The company engages in energy supply, trading, storage and low-carbon initiatives including hydrogen and heat pump projects.
