TGS launches seismic mega-survey offshore Mauritania

NOUADHIBOU, December 16, 2025 – TGS has launched a large-scale seismic project offshore Mauritania to support exploration across the West African Atlantic Margin, which it says will be the largest regional 3D dataset in Africa, the company said on Tuesday.

The Mauritania MegaSurvey comprises more than 100,000 square kilometres of multi-client 3D-seismic data. It integrates with TGS’s existing regional library to offer continuous seismic coverage from nearshore to ultradeep areas, facilitating basin screening and de-risking of acreage.

 

TGS developed the project in collaboration with Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum, Mines and Energy to promote offshore licensing and improve international investment confidence. The survey aims to improve geological understanding and reduce exploration risk.

“The Mauritania MegaSurvey delivers strategic regional value for our customers,” TGS executive vice-president of multi-client David Hajovsky said. “This regional perspective enables operators to assess Mauritania in the context of neighbouring proven and emerging basins.”

Mauritania’s offshore oil and gas sector has gained momentum in recent years, driven by deepwater gas discoveries and increasing interest from global operators. BP is developing the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gasfield with Kosmos Energy, one of Africa’s largest LNG projects, straddling the maritime border with Senegal. The country’s licensing efforts and proximity to Europe position it as a growing energy hub in West Africa.
