Pembina reaches FID on data centre power project

CALGARY, July 3, 2026 – Pembina Pipeline has reached a positive FID on its Greenlight Electricity Centre in Alberta, a combined-cycle plant that will supply power to a major new data centre in Alberta, the company announced on Thursday.

The USD 3.2-billion project will be developed in partnership with Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management in Sturgeon County, Alberta, and will have a generation capacity of 932 MW. The facility will supply power to a data centre customer under a long-term tolling agreement, starting in 2030. The customer’s name was not disclosed.

“We have leveraged our advantaged position within the Canadian midstream energy industry and are proud to be the first mover in responding to the power requirements of Alberta-based data centres, all within Pembina’s proven midstream model. Dedicated, contracted gas-to-power infrastructure represents a promising new growth platform,” said Scott Burrows, Pembina’s president and CEO.

 

The project will require approximately 4.25 mcm (150 mcf) per day of natural gas, creating new demand for gas producers in Western Canada. Pembina has secured gas transportation capacity for the project through recent open seasons on its Alliance Heartland Expansion Project and the TC Energy Nova Gas Transmission systems, as well as through other commercial arrangements.

According to Reuters, Canada has five operational hyperscale data centres and is planning to build nearly 100 more, with almost 90% earmarked for gas-rich Alberta.

Pembina is a Canadian energy infrastructure company that owns and operates pipelines, gas processing facilities, fractionation assets, storage terminals and export infrastructure in North America. The company transports hydrocarbons, processes natural gas and invests in power and low-carbon energy projects.
