Tjaart Van Der Walt, project manager for ST Specialized Transport (ST), talks to The Energy Year about incorporating efficiency-boosting technology into the company’s fleet and the growing importance of the Beira corridor for Mozambican and regional logistics. ST is a Mozambican transportation company specialising in moving out-of-gauge cargo in Mozambique and neighbouring countries.

Can you give us an overview of ST Specialised Transport’s main areas of operation in Mozambique?
We handle a wide variety of cargo, ensuring it gets delivered safely and efficiently, not just within Mozambique, but across the whole region.
Our team is particularly skilled at transporting things that require special care. We can move oversized equipment for big projects, even hazardous materials – anything that needs a little extra attention. We have a dedicated team of experts who are fully trained for these kinds of jobs, and all the specialised equipment to go with it. Plus, we have a reliable fleet of tanker trucks specifically designed to handle the long-distance transport of liquids such as fuel.
But we don’t stop at Mozambique’s borders. We operate in all neighbouring countries, from Zimbabwe and Zambia to South Africa and even the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And through our work with the J&J Group, we have access to a massive road freight network that stretches across Sub-Saharan Africa. Our tankers division prioritises both safety and cost-efficiency in fuel transportation. Our modern fleet meets all the latest safety regulations and utilises advanced technology such as overflow sensors, telematics and breathalysers to ensure secure deliveries. Our highly trained drivers undergo regular training in hazardous materials handling, first aid, firefighting and defensive driving, guaranteeing top-notch service.

How important is the Beira corridor for the company and for the national logistics market?
The Beira corridor is a game-changer for both ST Specialized Transport and the overall national logistics market in Mozambique. It has emerged as a fantastic alternative for transporting goods, not just for Mozambique, but also for our neighbours.
For years, the Port of Beira struggled to compete with the giants – Durban in the south and Dar es Salaam in the north. But thanks to incredible efforts by Cornelder, the port operator, and CFM, Mozambique’s railway company, together with customs officials, transporters and even the Beira city municipality, the port has transformed.
Beira has become a reliable, cost-effective and agile transportation hub for over 50 million consumers in surrounding countries who import goods through the port. It has also become a vital export point for global companies.
This transformation wasn’t easy. It involved massive investments in dredging the port, upgrading facilities and building warehouses outside the port area, as well as significant investments in IT and automation by Customs. Additionally, there’s been a constant push for improved roads and new shipping line services, and a lot of hard work from transporters to handle the increased cargo flow.

How does ST Specialised Transport contribute to the mining sector In Mozambique?
