Matola Gas Company is a Mozambican corporation that engages in the transportation, distribution and marketing of natural gas. It is jointly owned by Mozambique’s national oil and gas company, Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, and by South Africa’s Gigajoule International.

Matola holds a concession from the Mozambican government for the operation of a transmission and distribution pipeline that brings gas from a hub in Ressano Garcia to customers in Maputo province. The pipeline is about 100 kilometres long and has capacity to transport about 200 mcm of natural gas per year. The gas originates in the Pande and Temane fields.

The company supplies gas to around 30 industrial customers in Machava and Matola, two northwestern suburbs of Maputo, as well as in Marracuene. They include the Mozal aluminium smelter, Mozambique Cement and the Ressano Garcia power plant, in operation since 2015. Matola continues to invest in the development of its distribution infrastructure and adds new customers yearly.

In addition, Matola supplies compressed gas to customers in remote areas that are not serviced by distribution networks, using containerized modules that are distributed by road transport. Matola’s compressed gas service reaches both residential and industrial customers.

The company also supplies compressed gas for use in vehicles. In partnership with AutoGás, Matola distributes fuel at five dedicated stations in the Maputo area.
