DHAHRAN, May 20, 2024 – Saudi Aramco has signed three MoUs with US companies to advance the development of potential lower-carbon energy solutions, the company announced on Friday.

The agreements were signed during a visit of US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to Saudi Arabia and involve US companies Aeroseal, Rondo and Spiritus.

With Aeroseal, which develops air sealing technologies, Aramco will provide support to deploy, test and commercialise the company’s solutions in Saudi Arabia, including in novel applications such as gas pipelines.

Aramco will also explore opportunities to pilot and deploy technology from Spiritus, which focuses on modular systems for carbon sequestration through direct air capture.

With Rondo, Aramco has begun engineering studies for the first industrial-scale deployment of heat batteries to pursue emissions reductions at Aramco facilities, with subsequent scale-up to 1 GWh. The companies will also collaborate on developing other applications such as hydrogen production and carbon capture.

“Innovative technologies deployed at scale can help reduce the costs of reducing carbon emissions, and we are investing in developing these through our R&D, venture capital and technology deployment programs,” said Ali A. Al Meshari, Aramco’s senior vice-president of technology, oversight and coordination.
