MADRID, July 31, 2024 – Enagás has received authorisation from the Spanish government to begin work on the Spanish section of H2Med and the Spanish hydrogen distribution network, the company announced on Tuesday.

The H2Med project aims to create a pipeline network connecting the Iberian Peninsula with northern Europe, expanding the continent’s capabilities to receive and distribute supplies of green hydrogen. It is expected to be complete by 2030.

In April 2024, the European Commission included in its list of Projects of Common Interest the first axis of the Spanish hydrogen network and two underground hydrogen storage facilities in Cantabria and the Basque Country. Also included are a connection between Celorico da Beira in Portugal and Zamora in Spain and the BarMar maritime connection between Barcelona and Marseille.

With the authorisation, Enagás can start the formal process of authorisation and the subsequent construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the transport infrastructure and associated storage facilities.

In 2022, the company created the subsidiary Enagás Infraestructuras de Hidrógeno to separate its hydrogen activities from existing functions as a natural gas infrastructure operator. The company has also been divesting non-strategic assets to focus on its hydrogen strategy.
