MILAN, May 3, 2018 – Eni has struck about 18 metres of light oil deposits in the South West Meleiha licence onshore Egypt, the company announced on Thursday.

Well SWM A-2X, drilled in the Western Desert, has started production, delivering about 2,300 bopd and 11,300 cubic metres (400,000 cubic feet) of associated gas per day, the statement added.

“The discovery on [the] A-2X prospect is the result of a new exploration campaign designed to target the deep geological sequences of the Faghur Basin,” the company said. “Further to the development of this discovery, that will require appraisal activities, Eni plans, in the near term, the drilling of other exploratory prospects located nearby [the] A2-X discovery that, in case of success, may open a new productive area in Egypt.”

The news came days after Eni announced that it had doubled production at the Zohr gasfield offshore Egypt to 22.7 mcm (800 mcf) of gas per day.
