BEIJING, October 12, 2015 – The former head of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has been sentenced to a 16-year jail term following his conviction for accepting bribes.

Jiang Jiemin was found guilty of “receiving bribes, possessing large amounts of assets of unknown provenance, and abusing power as a state-owned company employee.”

Jiang held the top position at PetroChina as well as the CNPC. During his tenure, he is reported to have amassed $2.3 million in assets, some of which have now been confiscated.

The former CNPC head confessed in court to awarding job promotions and approving construction projects in return for bribes.

His conviction comes as part of a national anti-corruption crackdown that has seen the arrests of numerous government officials.
