ZUG, August 2, 2024 – Global energy and commodities trader Gunvor Group will join VARO Energy in a proposed joint venture to build a large-scale SAF manufacturing facility at the Gunvor Energy Rotterdam site, the companies announced on Thursday.

The agreement follows VARO’s announcement in September 2023 of its intention to build a large SAF facility as sole owner. Gunvor and VARO will now participate as equal partners in the project, sharing the costs and risks of developing the plant up to the FID.

The facility is being designed to process a variety of feedstocks and will be able to produce SAF and hydrotreated vegetable oil end products. With a nameplate capacity of 350,000 tpy, the companies estimate the facility will be capable of delivering up to 7% of the SAF mandate currently set by the EU for 2030.

Gunvor Energy Rotterdam is a refinery and terminal in the port of Rotterdam that currently produces finished and intermediate products such as LPG, naphtha and gasoline. FEED on the SAF facility is expected to be completed in Q4 2024.

“Large-scale production and adoption of SAF are critical to meeting the airline industry’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. We look forward to working with VARO to develop SAF production at our site in Rotterdam, which is a strategically central location with proximity to extensive port facilities, major European airports and well-developed energy infrastructure,” said Torbjörn Törnqvist, CEO of Gunvor.
