JGC and Technip win FEED for Rovuma LNG in Mozambique

MAPUTO, September 25, 2024 – JGC and Technip have been awarded the FEED contract for the Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique.

The Rovuma LNG project consists of a planned LNG plant with a total production capacity of 18 million tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG, comprising 12 fully modularised LNG trains of 1.5 million tpy each. The MRV joint venture that is developing the project brings together ExxonMobil, Eni and China National Petroleum Corporation.

The facility will be located in Palma, on the northeast coast of Mozambique, and will be fed by gas produced from the deepwater Area 4 block in the offshore Rovuma Basin, estimated to contain more than 2.4 tcm (85 tcf) of natural gas. It will feature electric LNG trains instead of gas turbines, reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional LNG projects.

An initial FID of USD 500 million for the project was reached in 2019 between the government and MRV, but development was paused during several years of force majeure status after terrorist attacks hit the key city of Palma.
