Nigeria begins construction of five mini-LNG plants

AJAOKUTA, January 31, 2025 – Nigeria’s NNPC and its partners have begun the construction of five mini-LNG plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, NNPC revealed in a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday.

The LNG plants represent a combined investment of USD 500 million and will have a combined capacity of 2.69 mcm (95 mcf) per day. The projects will be constructed on 330 square kilometres. NNPC has a stake in three of the five, while two are being developed in full by private companies.

NNCP Group CEO Mele Kyari said, “These mini LNG facilities will ensure the efficient transportation of gas over long distances, providing a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, mobility, industries and businesses. This is particularly important for regions that currently lack access to gas pipeline infrastructure.”

The mini-LNG plants further the federal government’s Gas Revolution Agenda, which seeks to achieve increased economic growth, industrialisation and diversification through the widespread use of gas. At a local level, they represent an important step forward in Kogi State’s efforts to become a hub for industry and build an airport.
