Petronas doubles North America LNG fleet
KUALA LUMPUR, July 9, 2024 – Ahead of LNG Canada’s start-up, Petronas has added three LNG vessels to its North America-focused fleet, the Malaysian NOC said on Tuesday.
With the addition of the energy-efficient vessels Puteri Sejinjang, Puteri Mahsuri and Puteri Mayang, the company now has six vessels serving the continent. The vessels each have a capacity of 174,000 cubic metres, making them the largest-capacity ships in the Petronas fleet.
The vessels Puteri Saadong, Puteri Ledang and Puteri Santubong were added in January of this year.
Petronas has a 25% stake in the LNG Canada facility, located in Kitimat, British Columbia, which is currently undergoing startup activities. The launch of commercial operations is expected by mid-2025.
The facility boasts a carbon emissions intensity that ranks among the world’s lowest, a full 60% lower than the global weighted average for LNG plants.
Petronas is one of the largest natural gas players in Canada, with most of its assets located on the North Montney formation in northeastern British Columbia.
In March, an official said the company is eyeing new investments in the Atlantic Basin in a bid to boost its global LNG market share to 10%.
