Sasol hits onshore gas find in Mozambique

MAPUTO, May 4, 2023 – Sasol has hit natural gas at the onshore Bonito-1 exploration well in Mozambique , the country’s upstream regulator announced on Friday.

The South African E&P player drilled to depths of 1,930 metres in Lower Cretaceous sediments. The find was confirmed through drill mud log readings, chromatographic data and modular dynamic testing.

The well is the second to be drilled in the PT5-C concession area located on the Mozambique basin, with the first finding no quantities of hydrocarbons.

The operator is currently undergoing assessment work to ascertain if commercial volumes have been found.

The 3,140-square-kilometre PT5-C block is located between Sosol’s producing Pande and Tamina fields in the province of Inhambane.

Sasol holds a 70% stake in the PT5-C concession, with NOC Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos holding the remaining stake.

The concession agreement was signed in October 2018 under the country’s fifth oil and gas licensing round.

Mozambique recently became an LNG producer following the launch of Eni’s Mozambique LNG project in November 2022.
