Sinopec starts up world’s largest solar-to-hydrogen plant

China

BEIJING, July 6, 2023 – Sinopec has commissioned a USD 417-million solar-to-hydrogen plant in the northwest Xinjiang region of China, Reuters reported on Friday.

The 6.3-square-kilometre Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Pilot Project produces 20,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen and is powered by a 300-MW photovoltaic plant.

It also contains a hydrogen storage tank farm with the capacity to store 210,000 cubic metres.

According to Sinopec, it is the largest plant of its kind in the world.

The facility is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 485,000 tonnes per year.

The project falls under Sinopec’s strategy to achieve carbon emissions peak before 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050.

China plans to produce between 100,000 and 200,000 metric tonnes per year of green hydrogen by 2025.
