Suspected resumption of Somali piracy

ISTANBUL, March 14, 2017 – A Comoros-flagged bunker tanker has allegedly been hijacked by Somali pirates, media outlets reported on Tuesday. The incident occurred on Monday. If confirmed, the hijacking would mark the first-such event in five years.

The Aris 13 reportedly sent out a distress call off Puntland shortly before switching off its automatic tracking system. The ship, carrying a crew of eight, was last seen altering its course for the Somali coast.

European Union Naval Force aircraft have been dispatched to locate the tanker.
