Equinor and Sonangol E&P join Shell to study Angola’s oil potential

LUANDA, May 13, 2025 – Angola’s National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) has formalised the inclusion of Equinor and Sonangol E&P in an addendum to the MoU first signed with Shell Exploration and Production Angola on November 2024, the ANPG announced on Tuesday.

 

Equinor and Sonangol E&P will be new partners in the study of the oil potential of several blocks located in the Congo, Kwanza and Benguela basins in Angola’s offshore.

At the initial signing ceremony in 2024, Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas Diamantino Azevedo said, “MIREMPET has guided ANPG to develop the necessary actions to attract renowned international oil companies that do not currently operate in Angola. Shell’s return to Angola, after 25 years, represents the successful implementation of the Angolan executive’s efforts, as well as indicates the existence of significant potential for oil resources in our country.”

The agreement paves the way for joint studies aimed at assessing the hydrocarbons potential of offshore blocks and reinforces Shell’s renewed commitment to Angola’s energy sector following its departure from the country in the early 2000s.
