TotalEnergies enters hydropower sector in Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi
PARIS, July 30, 2024 – TotalEnergies has acquired stakes in a portfolio of hydropower projects in Uganda, Rwanda and Malawi, the energy giant said on Tuesday.
The company acquired stakes in the projects via its 100% acquisition of SN Power from Norwegian renewables player Scatec as part of its multi-energy strategy.
The portfolio includes a 28.3% stake in the 250-MW Bujagali hydropower plant in operation in Uganda, which covers more than 25% of the country’s peak electricity demand.
Unspecified minority stakes were also taken in two projects under development in Rwanda (260 MW) and Malawi (360 MW).
“In particular, we are delighted to be able to become a player in hydro power in Uganda, a country where we are also developing a major oil project,” chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies Patrick Pouyanné said.
“This is another example of TotalEnergies’ ability to implement its multi-energy strategy in oil-producing countries to support them in their energy transition.”
In Uganda, TotalEnergies is developing the Tilenga oil project in the Lake Albert area with a 56.67% stake. The company also holds a 62% stake in the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, which will transport Lake Albert crude to the Tanzanian coast for export.
