Trafigura, ProMarks sign deal for Angola-based regional power supply
LUANDA, July 4, 2024 – Commodities giant Trafigura and engineering company ProMarks have signed an MoU with the Angolan government to develop a PPP model for a major regional power transmission and supply project, Trafigura said on Thursday.
The companies will conduct a technical and economic viability study with a view to creating a public-private partnership model for a 2-GW project.
The project involves building and operating a 2-GW high-voltage electricity interconnector (an HVDC transmission line) to take surplus green electricity produced by hydroelectric dams located in the north of Angola to the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Copperbelt and Zambia, integrating with the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
The electricity would be purchased from Angola’s National Electricity Transmission Network and sold to customers such as global mining companies in the Copperbelt and throughout countries in the Southern African Development Community.
The Copperbelt is a minerals-rich region spanning areas of the DRC and Zambia. It hosts globally significant deposits of copper, among other critical minerals.
ProMarks is a 100% Angolan engineering company focused on the energy industry. It is present in Angola, Ireland, Portugal and the UAE.
