Saudi Arabia connects world’s largest battery energy storage project to grid
KHAMIS MUSHAIT, December 22, 2025 – Saudi Arabia has completed the grid connection of a 7.8 GWh battery energy storage project that is set to become the world’s largest operational system once fully energised, international media reported on Friday.
The energy storage system, supplied by China’s Sungrow, includes over 1,500 PowerTitan 2.0 units installed across three sites in Najran, Khamis Mushait and Madaya. The project is designed to provide an annual charging and discharging capacity of 2.2 billion kWh, which can supply electricity to around 400,000 households.
Sungrow completed manufacturing and installation within 58 days using a streamlined AC-DC block design that includes embedded power conversion systems, pre-assembled battery containers, and integrated medium voltage components. A local service team was deployed in Saudi Arabia to manage the installation and grid connection.
The project supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to generate 50% of its power from renewables by 2030. As of early December, the kingdom had connected 12.3 GW of solar and wind capacity to the grid, along with 8 GWh of energy storage.
