Sonangol – Sociedade Nacional de Combustíveis de Angola EP – is the Angolan state-owned oil company. Established in 1976, Sonangol is responsible for the exploration, production, manufacture, transport, and commercialisation of hydrocarbons in Angola. It performs its activities autonomously or in association with other national or foreign companies. Developing its business through 18 subsidiaries, Sonangol is an integrated oil and gas company. Under the 2019-2022 governmental Privatisation Programme, Sonangol has been undertaking an asset divestment strategy intended to make the company more efficient in exploration and production and diversified across the energy chain while encouraging private investments.

Headquartered in Luanda, Sonangol is a multinational company with more than 30 subsidiaries and affiliated companies worldwide. It is present in Brazil, Venezuela, Singapore, Hong Kong, Portugal and the UK.

Main activities: the company’s primary operations revolve around prospection, research, development, production, transport, commercialisation, refining and transformation of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons, as well as the supply, storage and distribution of their derivatives, including petrochemical activities.

Current objectives:

  • Drive the development of a solid national industry to sustain and grow the oil sector
  • Increase the domestic production capacity of refined products to decrease Angola’s reliance on imports
  • Invest in human and technological capital to increase the company’s productivity.
