ADNOC deploys AI-enabled process optimisation tech
ABU DHABI, August 27, 2024 – ADNOC is deploying an in-house AI-enabled process optimisation technology across its operations after initial testing showed it could reduce unplanned shutdowns by 50%, the company announced on Tuesday.
The Neuron 5 technology autonomously monitors performance of critical equipment, enabling preventative maintenance, reducing operational downtime and boosting efficiency, ADNOC said. In using it, the company has been able to avoid time-consuming manual inspections.
A pilot phase – in which the technology was tested at ADNOC Onshore’s Northeast Bab field and ADNOC Gas’s Taweelah gas compression across hundreds of pieces of equipment – found that Neuron 5 could reduce unplanned shutdowns by 50% and increase planned maintenance intervals by 20%.
“ADNOC is placing AI at the heart of its operations and leveraging industry leading advanced technologies to help responsibly meet the world’s growing energy demand,” ADNOC upstream executive director Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy said.
“The development and deployment of Neuron 5 across our upstream and downstream facilities demonstrates this strategy in action and highlights our continued progress towards our vision to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company.”
In July, ADNOC announced it had deployed RoboWell, AIQ’s world-first AI-based autonomous well-control solution, at a field offshore Abu Dhabi. RoboWell uses cloud-based AI algorithms to autonomously operate wells that self-adjust according to changing conditions.
AIQ was created in 2020 in line with the UAE’s ambition to become a leading global hub in the area of AI. In May, Presight AI acquired a 51% stake in the company, with ADNOC retaining 49%.
The Neuron 5 technology was developed by ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Center, AIQ and AVEVA.
