PARIS, June 7, 2024 – Air Products will supply 70,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen for 15 years to TotalEnergies for the decarbonisation of its refineries in Northern Europe, the French energy giant said on Friday.

Air Products, a US-based gas and chemicals supplier, will begin the supplies in 2030, which are expected to prevent around 700,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

The deal with Air Products is a first step towards achieving TotalEnergies’ objective of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions from its operated oil and gas operations (Scope 1+2) by 40% by 2030 compared to 2015 levels, the French company said.

Last year, the company tendered for 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen supply.

TotalEnergies described Air Products as a “first mover” and “worldwide leader in terms of hydrogen supply.”

“We always believed that if we made clean hydrogen available at commercial scale, the demand would be there,” Air Products chairman, president and CEO Seifi Ghasem said.

“Clearly the demand is here, and it will grow significantly as we move forward, playing an essential role in decarbonising heavy industry and other sectors.”
