Eni restarts Libya onshore exploration after 10-year hiatus

TRIPOLI, October 28, 2024 – Eni and partner BP have resumed onshore oil exploration in Libya following a 10-year hiatus, the country’s NOC said on Saturday.

Onshore exploration drilling by the two energy giants was halted in 2014 amid growing political instability and security concerns.

 

According to a statement released by the National Oil Corporation, Eni has restarted drilling in Area B (96/3) in the Ghadames Basin, where BP is a partner.

An initial exploration well, A1-96/3 (Hasheem Prospect), has been drilled, with operations overseen by local player Mellitah Oil & Gas.

No information was provided on the results seen in A1-96/3.

Eni is Libya’s largest international gas producer, with yearly output of 5.95 bcm (210 bcf).
