Maha Energy requests phase extension in Oman

MUSCAT, August 3, 2023 – Maha Energy has requested an extension on the initial exploration and production sharing agreement of onshore Block 70 in Oman following a short-term production test, the Swedish E&P company announced on Wednesday.

The concession’s 2022/23 drilling program involved drilling eight wells, with five producing oil at an estimated average rate of 300 bopd per well. The remaining three wells were suspended after producing water and gas.

The company is currently scaling up chemical treatment of the produced oil to reduce viscosity and enhance flowability.

The goal is to reach the required specifications to offload the product to a third-party processing facility and transport it via Oman’s national pipeline system.

Under the contract, the initial phase ends in late October 2023. The company has submitted an extension request to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

If the extension is granted, Maha Energy intends to run detailed simulations, restart cold production and troubleshoot maximum sustained production rates and prepare a detailed plan for EOR.

Maha Energy operates Block 70 with a 65% stake, with local entity Mafraq Energy holding the remaining 35% stake.
