USA proposes Gulf of Mexico offshore wind round

WASHINGTON D.C., February 23, 2023 – The USA is proposing its first-ever offshore wind lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Department of Interior announced on Wednesday.

The proposed sale notice includes a 415-square-kilometre area offshore Lake Charles, Louisiana, and two areas offshore Galveston, Texas, encompassing 415 square kilometres and 392 square kilometres.

The sites have the potential to power up to 1.3 million homes.

 

The federal register is expected to be issued in February 2023, which will initiate a 60-day public comment period.

Should the move be finalised, the government will publish a final notice and the companies qualified to participate at least 30 days before the sale.

In 2022, the Biden administration held three offshore wind lease auctions off New York, New Jersey and California coasts.

In March 2022, Equinor and BP signed an agreement to transform the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in the state of New York into an operations and maintenance hub for the offshore wind sector.
