The Energy Year Kuwait 2024, a comprehensive report on Kuwait’s thriving energy sector, was officially launched at the Grand Hyatt Kuwait on October 9, 2024. The launch marks the ninth edition of The Energy Year’s series on the country.

Bader Al Attar, KPC’s Managing Director of Planning & Finance and Anwar Al Mutlaq, Shell Kuwait’s Country Chair and Vice President for Upstream, were keynote speakers at the launch, sponsored by Zain, National Technology Enterprises Company (NTEC) and Hub2Energy.

“It is an honour to stand here today, at this prestigious event, to celebrate the achievements and advancements of Kuwait’s energy industry,” noted Al Attar in his address. “I am reminded of the significant strides we have made in our journey towards a sustainable and innovative energy future.”

The event featured an Awards Ceremony during which The Energy Year team distributed seven awards honouring individuals, companies and projects for their exceptional contributions to the domestic market over the past year.

Wadha Ahmed Al Khateeb, CEO of KNPC and Acting CEO of Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company, was named Person of the Year for her leadership in navigating Kuwait’s downstream segment through a transformative period. In collaboration with KPC and its subsidiaries, she has played a key role in shaping the nation’s energy landscape and ushering in a promising and sustainable future.

“This is not just a personal award but a recognition for every employee in the refining sector for all our hard work, dedication, professionalism and achievements throughout the years, said Al Khateeb. “Congratulations to all of the businesses in the refining sector of Kuwait.”

Following Generation Ready, the Mozambique Energy and Industry Summit (MEIS) edition will open on the 3 July, hosted by the Provincial Government of Cabo Delgado and the Mozambican Local Content Association (ACLM).

Over two days, MEIS 2024 will bring together key national and international stakeholders, made up of respective governments and leading organisations across the region to share knowledge and drive business opportunities across the continent in the energy sector.

This exclusive, closed-door event brought together distinguished panellists, including Bader Ebrahim Al Attar, managing director of planning and finance at Kuwait Petroleum Corporation; Karim Al Sayed, managing director of SLB in Kuwait; Anar Aliyev, vice president of Kuwait and Qatar for bp; Anwar Almutlaq, country chairman and vice president of upstream in Kuwait for Shell; Dr. Dawoud Bahzad, acting executive director of the Petroleum Research Center at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research; and Kunal Singh, CFA, general manager of the international banking division at Commercial Bank of Kuwait (Al-Tijari).

Together we delved into Kuwait’s strategic measures to develop successful and effective low-carbon strategies. Our discussions highlighted the importance of collaborations and the associated opportunities and challenges and how these can help Kuwait build a sustainable, economically viable and resilient domestic energy value chain.

During the discussion, we highlighted how initiatives such as powering electric submersible pumps with solar power can help achieve Kuwait’s aim to produce 4 million bpd by 2035 in a more sustainable way. The technology needed for this transition is not new; it has been around for years. The focus now is on making these technologies scalable and ensuring economic feasibility to reach the net-zero target by 2050 in the oil and gas industry and countrywide by 2060.

Additionally, discussions between IOCs and KPC emphasised the need to go beyond enhanced technical service agreements through the implementation of a more comprehensive partnership agreement framework.

The event was attended by Royal Commission of Jubail CEO Ahmed bin Zaid Al Hussain as keynote speaker, as well as Arabian Drilling CEO Ghassan Mirdad.

“When our kingdom thinks big in terms of mega-projects, it will always deliver big. By 2027, Jubail aims to have the world’s largest carbon capture mega-project,” Ahmed bin Zaid ALHussain said in his speech.

“The advantages of localisation are reduction in supply chain delays, diminished logistics complexity and enhancement of our overall ability to swiftly respond to market demands. Localisation is not a choice; it is a transformative force that drives us toward the kingdom’s Vision 2030,” said Salwa Helal, Chief Supply Chain Officer of Arabian Drilling, who took to the stage to deliver her remarks upon receiving the Drilling Contractor of the Year award.

The event also featured an awards ceremony, where The Energy Year’s team distributed six awards honouring companies and projects for their exceptional contributions to the domestic market over the past year.

The Energy Year Nigeria 2023 launch and awards ceremony saw  the NUPRC awarded the Institution of the Year Award for its role in encouraging technological advances.

Komolafe said, ‘The Energy Year is an essential market intelligence tool and a foremost energy intelligence provider. The sole presence of The Energy Year in Nigeria means that we are a great country with a strong and emerging energy industry.”

The Person of the Year Award went to Simbi Wabote, Executive Director of the Nigerian Local Content Development and Monitoring Board, represented by the General Manager of Corporate Communications, Angela Okoro. Adamantine Energy, represented by Head of Human Resources Nomso Diala received the Integrated Energy Company of the Year award. Gas Company of the Year  went to ND Western, represented by Finance Manager Ilesanmi Obazu. OneWattSolar founder Femi Oye collected his companies award for Sustainable Company of the Year. Shell Nigeria Gas was named Energy Investor of the Year and award was collected by Senior HSE Advisor Dr Sam Pepple. Energy Transportation Company of the Year Award went to the Sea Transport Group, represented by General Manager Musa Ibn Saidu.  Human Resources Manager Motilayo Akerele accepted Downstream Company of the Year Award on behalf of Brass Fertilizer and Petrochemical Company.

The event was attended by National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) president Paulino Jerónimo as keynote speaker and exclusively sponsored by Nossa Seguros, one of the country’s leading insurance companies, and Grupo Simples, a 100% Angolan services provider for the oil and gas industry.

“The energy map of Africa has been redrawn. There are many countries that are producing oil or have recently discovered it. That means that there is more competition for the same number of operating companies. It’s always important to give incentives. Generating information on these incentives is essential in order to attract investors,” Paulino Jerónimo said in his speech.

Alexandre Carreira, CEO of Nossa Seguros, and Ruben Campos, commercial manager of Grupo Simples, both took the stage to deliver their remarks.

The Energy Year Angola 2023 highlights the African nation’s efforts and positive results in reversing its decline in oil production as drilling activities, bidding rounds and overall investments have experienced explosive growth throughout the past year, positioning Angola as a regional energy hub. Produced in partnership with the ANPG, the report offers a detailed picture of Angola’s energy scene under João Lourenço’s renewed administration, portraying the steps the country is taking to enhance its natural gas production, upgrade its refining capacity and cement its vast potential as a destination for renewable energy investments in the continent.
